campfire story [cropsey]

in a fire pit

camp out

we recollect

and dictate

our stories

of camp blackfoot

burnt to ashes

nothing left

but the ruins

where once

everyone hated cropsey

an evil bastard

caretaker 

he was a drunk

two bottles a day

whiskey his choice

most days 

spending his time

up in space

but if he ever

caught you

look out!

he could 

strip the lead paint

from the walls

solely by breath

a sadist

generating real pleasure

from hurting people

scaring them

his garden shears

long thin blades

and demonic stare

was enough

to make any man's life

living hell

yet hell breeds chaos

fire and hate

he crisped and cried

for his return

paid his dues

in an institute

he survived

by eating 

his hunts alive

but now he's out there

watching, waiting

don't look!

he'll see you

don't move!

he'll hear you

don't breathe!

you're dead!

Ben Bova has a handful of hard SF texts that are quite legendary.  The scientific/mathematical depth of the ideas explored in his works in unparalleled by a lot of other writers in the field.  Not only does he write hard SF, but he has a bunch of epic series to his name as well.  Not to mention, some dope covers!

diablo red

safeguard

the archaic artifacts

and sacred objects

of our parent's

distant offspring

let the bloody heritages

fall free from their

accumulated flasks

and metallo-matrixed

coated metal guards

feel the flows

of their glowing torments

and their aural piths

accumulated

on foreign housewares

and ancient jars

we offer these objects

for the shadows of the night

the dead kings

defeated warriors

gunned-down militia

fighting the cyclops

and flying sirens

of ancient times

but fear must be secular

and intriguingly molecular

it seems as if

these chemical cages

floating in the ether

can trap the calls

from violent men

with faces of Diablo red

they have phone recordings

of mischievous children

intelligently interacting

and playing with a foggy

out of focused

spinning world

of shadows and chaos
